About Smart Living Portugal
Smart Living Portugal helps English, Dutch and German-speaking people living in Portugal cut their energy costs, make their homes more comfortable and use smart-home technology sensibly — with Portuguese rules, tariffs and conditions, not generic advice written for another country.
Who's behind it
The site is run by Niko, a Dutch IT professional who moved to central Portugal. His own house runs on solar with battery storage, Home Assistant, and a rural internet connection — so the topics here are the ones he had to solve himself: UPAC paperwork, tariffs and kVA, heat-pump heating, damp, power cuts, pool equipment and energy monitoring.
How we work
- Portuguese facts (tariffs, laws, subsidies) are checked against official or primary sources and dated; we list sources at the end of each guide.
- We never invent hands-on tests. When we describe our own setup or measurements, we say so explicitly.
- Research and first drafts are partly assisted by AI tools; every guide is reviewed before publication. Read our editorial policy.
- We earn money through affiliate links, which never decide what we recommend. See our affiliate disclosure.
