Is a home battery worth it in Portugal? 5 kWh vs 10 kWh, payback and backup
With exports earning a fraction of what imports cost, storing your own solar looks tempting. But a battery is a separate investment with its own payback. Here's how to decide — and how to size it.

Key takeaways
- A battery is worth the most when you export a lot at midday and import a lot in the evening.
- Value per stored kWh ≈ import price minus what you'd earn exporting it: roughly €0.10–0.17 in Portugal today.
- Size to your evening/night consumption, not to your panels: many homes are well served by 5 kWh.
- Backup during outages is a separate feature — check for a backup (EPS) output and how it switches over.
The simple maths
Each kWh a battery shifts from midday to evening saves you the import price (about €0.17–0.24/kWh in 2026) but costs you the export income you would otherwise have received (about €0.05–0.08/kWh, or nothing without a surplus contract). So each cycled kWh is worth roughly €0.10–0.17.
| Usable capacity | Useful cycles/year | kWh shifted | Value at €0.12/kWh | Value at €0.17/kWh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh | 250 | ≈ 1,100 (at 90% efficiency) | ≈ €135 | ≈ €190 |
| 10 kWh | 200 | ≈ 1,800 | ≈ €215 | ≈ €305 |
With Portuguese market prices adding roughly €2,000–4,000 for a battery, a purely financial payback is often 10+ years. That's why a battery makes most sense when it also does something else for you: keeping the lights on in outages, enabling zero-export, or letting you charge cheaply at off-peak (vazio) hours on a time-of-use tariff.
5 kWh or 10 kWh?
- Look at your consumption between sunset and sunrise. Many couples use 3–6 kWh in that window; families with electric cooking, AC or a heat pump more.
- A battery that is rarely full in winter or rarely empty in summer is oversized. 5 kWh cycled daily often beats 10 kWh half-used.
- Choose a modular system so you can add capacity later once you have a year of real data.
- Check the inverter: a hybrid inverter avoids a second inverter and is usually cheaper long-term.
Backup during power cuts
Rural Portugal sees outages after storms, and the Iberian blackout of April 2025 made many people think about resilience. Not every battery powers your house when the grid fails. Check for a backup/EPS output, which circuits it feeds (often only a protected sub-board), how fast it switches, and whether solar keeps charging while the grid is down.
Options to shortlist
Zendure home and balcony storage
Best for: Modular storage, retrofit to existing solar
Zendure's systems are built for retrofit and modular expansion, which suits starting small and growing once you have data.
- Modular capacity
- Popular across Europe
- Confirm backup features per model
EcoFlow home batteries and power stations
Best for: Backup-first households
EcoFlow focuses on backup and portability; some systems can run selected circuits during outages.
- Strong on backup
- Portable options for rural homes
- Portable units have limited continuous output
For fixed rooftop systems your installer will typically propose a battery matched to the hybrid inverter (for example from the inverter maker's own range). Ask for usable capacity, warranted cycles and throughput, round-trip efficiency, and who services it locally.
Frequently asked questions
Does a battery qualify for subsidies in Portugal?
Not at the moment. Earlier Fundo Ambiental programmes covering batteries have closed; a voucher scheme for solar with batteries has been announced but not opened. Check the Fundo Ambiental site before buying.
Will a battery work during a blackout?
Only if it has a backup (EPS) function wired to the circuits you want powered. Many grid-tied systems switch off for safety when the grid fails.
Should I buy a battery now or later?
If your inverter is hybrid and the system is modular, adding storage later costs little extra — and you'll size it better with a year of real data.
